Captain Mundel began his career in the Bureau of Security Services in 1989 before assignment to the County and Municipal Police Academy. He was first assigned to the North County Precinct in 1990 as a police officer. He served as a Field Training Officer, Crash Investigator and Advisor to the Precinct’s Explorer program. In 1998, he was transferred to the Division of Patrol, Bureau of Special Operations as the administrative aide. In 1998, he returned to service in the North County Precinct until his promotion to Sergeant in 1999. In March 2002, he was given the task of starting and supervising the newly formed Highway Safety Unit in the Division of Special Operations. In the Highway Safety assignment, he was responsible for the supervision of officers in various traffic safety enforcement projects and education programs. In addition, he served as Chairman of the St. Louis Regional Traffic Safety Council in 2008 and 2009. In 2008, he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant and returned to the North County Precinct as a Watch Commander for two years until he was reassigned to the West County Precinct in 2010. In 2012, he was designated as the Acting Precinct Commander of the West County Precinct for most of that year. In May 2014, he was transferred to the Division of Operational Support as Commander of the Personnel Services Unit. In the position, he supervised the staff in recruitment and hiring of Department commissioned and professional staff. In October 2015, he was promoted to the rank of Captain and transferred to the Division of Criminal Investigation and assigned as the Commander of the Bureau of Criminal Identification. The Bureau is responsible for operation of the Police Crime Lab, Crime Scene Unit and various evidentiary investigative units of the Department. In October 2018, he was assigned as Commander of the Wildwood Precinct. Captain Mundel continues to serve as Commander of the Department’s Accident Reconstruction Team overseeing training and incident responses.
Captain Mundel holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Administration of Justice and a Master of Science Degree in Strategic Leadership. He has received numerous awards and letters of appreciation, including two Chief's Commendations and various community awards of recognition. He resides in St. Louis County with his family.
