UPCOMING VETERANS DAY HOLIDAY - November 11, 2020City Hall will be closed on Wednesday, November 11, 2020, in recognition of the Veterans Day Holiday. The date of Veterans Day relates to the end of World War I, when an armistice was signed on the 11th day of the 11th month, and was 'the war to end all wars.' Unfortunately, that has not been the case, but men and women, since that time, have continued to proudly serve this country and enter into harms way, so we can all enjoy the freedom to vote, to express our opinions, and to pursue life, liberty, and happiness. So, please thank a veteran for his or her service and say a prayer for those who never returned from the battlefield.
Trash pick-up from Waste Connections, the City's residential hauler, will not effected by this holiday. City Hall will reopen on Thursday, November 12, 2020, at 8:00 a.m., via appointment, by telephone, or other electronic means.

MASKS AND THEIR ROLE IN BEATING BACK COVID-19Masks are recommended as a simple barrier to help prevent respiratory droplets from traveling into the air and onto other people, when the person wearing the mask coughs, sneezes, talks, or raises their voice. This barrier created by a mask is called source control. This recommendation is based on what the medical community knows about the role respiratory droplets play in the spread of the virus that causes COVID-19, paired with emerging evidence from clinical and laboratory studies that shows masks reduce the spray of droplets, when worn over the nose and mouth. COVID-19 spreads mainly among people who are in close contact with one another (within about 6 feet), so the use of masks is particularly important in settings, where people are close to each other, or where social distancing is difficult to maintain.- CDC recommends that people wear masks in public settings and when around people who don’t live in your household, especially when other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain.
- Masks may help prevent people who have COVID-19 from spreading the virus to others.
- Masks are most likely to reduce the spread of COVID-19, when they are widely used by people in public settings.
- Masks should NOT be worn by children under the age of 2 or anyone who has trouble breathing, is unconscious, incapacitated, or otherwise unable to remove the mask without assistance.

WEST NEWSMAGAZINE - A REQUEST"From the Editor"For more than 25 years, we have mailed you a copy of West Newsmagazine a few times a month through the United States Postal Service. You did not have to ask for it nor did you have to pay for it; you just had to live in a single-family home within our distribution footprint. The cost of producing and delivering the paper is covered through the sale of advertisements, mostly to local businesses. Not sure if you have heard, but both small businesses and the U.S. Postal Service are under a whole bunch of stress lately. COVID-19 has made the already incredibly difficult job of running a local business that much more difficult. For the past several years, the USPS has been raising rates at a historic pace due to all kinds of changes in customer behavior. When you are sending out one envelope at a time, postal increases do not seem like a big deal. But when you are mailing out 65,000 papers twice a month, those increases hit really hard. We have always tried to absorb the increased cost to protect our advertising partners, but it is simply getting too hard under current circumstances. Which brings us to the favor we need to ask: We need you to request this paper. That’s it. We simply need you to visit westnewsmagazine.com/request and fill out a very quick online form that says you would like to receive the paper. Your request allows us to qualify for a different postal permit. You do not have to buy a subscription, and we will never use or sell your information for any other purpose than to send you this newspaper. There is something in this for you, for us and for our advertisers. For us, we save a few bucks on postage and will continue to fund the quality local journalism one can only find in West Newsmagazine. For local businesses, it means they can still afford to promote their products to our large readership. And for you, you actually get more control over how the newspaper is delivered. You can forward it to your vacation home, you can pause delivery during business trips, or pretty much do anything you can do with first class mail. Plus, we hope that you will feel good knowing that you have helped to support local journalism, local business and local jobs.
