Community Park Planning & Development

A major goal of the 2007 Action Plan for Parks and Recreation was the acquisition of properties for future park facilities. One major purchase of a large parcel of land for a community-sized park and several smaller purchases for three new neighborhood parks. Reflecting this ongoing commitment, the City Council approved a purchase agreement at its January 26, 2009 meeting for the acquisition of an 63 acre (approximately) site near the intersection of State Route 109 and State Route 100.

This property will be the city's community park and be developed in phases, as funding becomes available in the next 5 to 10 years.

The purchase of the community park property was funded through revenues received from the city's capital improvement sales tax that was approved by the voters of Wildwood in 1998. This one-half cent sales tax is dedicated to a mix of public works, planning, and parks projects within the city. The appropriation of these funds, for the purchase of this community park, was approved by the City Council in the fall of 2007, prior to proposition P being placed on the ballot for the November 2008 general election.

The Concept Plan
In the fall of 2010, the city hired Oates Associates, Inc., Nelson Byrd Woltz, and Vector Communications to assist in the creation of a concept plan for this park. This concept was based upon a number of factors the city received from the public as part of the outreach effort were the key determinant for future efforts in this regard. To assist in the public outreach effort and creation of this concept plan, the City Council appointed a Community Park Advisory Committee (CPAC) consisting of two members from each ward, one member at large, and two City Council liaisons.

Phase I
In June 2012 Oates Associates began the design and engineering for the first phase of the Community Park Property.  Phase I includes the development of a playground area, trails, pavilion, dog park, and roadway and utility improvements.
